Power system: a system of electric energy production, transmission, distribution and consumption composed of power generation, power supply (substation, transmission, distribution), and electricity consumption.

The main structure of the power system includes power supply, power network and electricity load center.

Power supply refers to various power plants/stations used to produce electrical energy. Power plants convert primary energy in nature into electrical energy, and are classified into thermal power generation, hydropower generation and wind power generation according to the energy used.

The power network includes the transmission grid and the distribution grid for the transmission, transformation and distribution of electrical energy. Its function is to boost the power generated by the power supply to a certain level and then transmit it to the substation of the load center, and then step down to a certain level, and then connect it to the user through the distribution line.

The task of the power transmission system is to transmit the electrical energy from the power plant to the electrical load center economically and safely. Power transmission is achieved by boosting the power generated by the generator with a transformer, and then connecting it to the transmission line through control equipment such as circuit breakers. Transmission facilities include transmission lines, substations, switching stations and converter stations.

According to the nature of the transmission current, transmission is divided into AC transmission and DC transmission. At present, three-phase AC transmission is widely used, and the frequency is 50Hz (or 60Hz). Direct current transmission is the use of direct current transmission after rectifying the electrical energy generated by the alternator.

The distribution system consists of distribution substations, high-voltage distribution lines, distribution transformers, low-voltage distribution lines and corresponding control and protection equipment.

Electricity load center refers to the concentrated area of electric energy consumption. Usually an area of industrial, population and urban agglomeration.

An ideal power system should supply power to users at a specified voltage level (nominal voltage) with a constant frequency (50/60HZ) and sinusoidal waveform. Since the parameters of each element of the system (generators, transformers, lines, etc.) are not ideally linear or symmetrical, this ideal state does not exist in practice. A variety of problems have resulted in the concept of power quality.

At present, power quality control devices are divided into the following three categories according to their functions: reactive power compensation devicesfilters and unified power quality regulators (UPQC).
